The
Thuringowa Bulldogs are a proud family based Australian
Rules Football Club and are the only Australian Rules
Football Club to be based in the City of Thuringowa.
The
Club, the Thuringowa Bulldogs Australian Football
Club, formally the West Townsville Bulldogs Australian
Football Club, was founded in 1969 and is one of five
Senior and eight Junior AFL Clubs in Townsville. We
presently have two Senior teams, eight Junior, one
Ladies and a Masters team involved in the AFL Townsville
competition. The Bulldogs field Under 9, 11, 13, 15
and Under 17 teams as well as hosting an Auskick Program.
In
1981 the Players and Members built a Clubhouse in
Pioneer Park, opposite the Willows Shopping Centre.
This clubhouse is affectionately known as the Doghouse.
Pioneer Park is adjacent to one of the busiest intersections
within the twin-cities, Riverway Drive, Ross River
Road, Hervy Range Road and Thuringowa Drive. Pioneer
Park is now the centre of the Thuringowa City Council's
ambitious project, Riverway.
Stage
Two of the Riverway Project consists of a 16.5 million
dollar sports stadium in Pioneer Park. This stadium
is known as Tony Ireland Stadium and has been constructed
on the site of our Home Ground. In 2001 the TBAFC
formed an integral partnership with the Thuringowa
City Council in the planning and development stages
of the Sports Stadium. The TBAFC is now the major
Anchor Tennant at the Stadium and all
Junior, Senior and Ladies teams train and play Home
Matches there.
Over
the last few years the Club has not achieved the Goal
of every Club, winning Premierships, but has been
very competitive. Recent seasons have seen a revitalised
Club regain some lost pride as the Clubs Youth
Policy has started to pay dividends. In the
seasons to come we know that this Policy will result
in further on-field success.
AFL
in Townsville and Thuringowa is a minor sport compared
to the likes of Basketball or Rugby League and at
times all Clubs struggle to survive. With the construction
of the Riverway Stadium the TBAFC have expectations
that one day the code may pose considerable competition
to the likes of Rugby League and Basketball. Never
the less, we are very committed and dedicated to our
chosen sport and we will strive to foster the sport
in the region.
The
TBAFC is a community minded club and we believe it
to be a family orientated club. The Bulldogs
encourages members of the community to become active
members through volunteering. The TBAFC
committee offers training and assistance to all and
any community member that is prepared to donate their
time to the Club and its members. There are many tasks
that need to be carried out to enable a club to function
and the club is a testament to the old adage many
hands make light work.
I
would encourage you to join the club and become part
of club as the Thuringowa Bulldogs AFC is
the future of community sport in Thuringowa.
